Applied negative dialectics, in plain terms

Most analysis looks for what a text asserts. Negative dialectics — a tradition of critical thought that David has spent two decades applying to organisations — starts from what a text cannot quite hold together: the tensions, exclusions and contradictions inside confident language.

Applied to institutions, the method treats those tensions as information. A strategy that contradicts its own operating model, a policy whose responsibilities never land on a named role, a transformation story at odds with daily practice — each is a signal worth surfacing before it becomes a failure.

Judgement under uncertainty

More information does not automatically produce better judgement. In complex environments, decisions are shaped by how language frames the situation — which assumptions are made speakable, which responsibilities are assigned, and which contradictions remain politely invisible.

ImaginAND's method concentrates on those framing effects, because that is where institutional consequences begin.

Meaning, contradiction, ethical drift and symbolic misalignment

These four terms anchor the platform's analysis. Meaning: what language commits an institution to, beyond its literal content. Contradiction: claims that cannot both be true in practice. Ethical drift: the slow movement of language away from stated values. Symbolic misalignment: when what is signalled and what is done part ways.

Material Entropic Dynamics

David is currently developing Material Entropic Dynamics, a framework concerned with responsibility, constraint and institutional behaviour. Its relationship to the ImaginAND platform is an active area of the venture's research programme.

Human judgement and responsible use

The system assists interpretation; it does not become the accountable decision-maker. ImaginAND is designed to widen what decision-makers can see — not to certify decisions, detect truth or absorb responsibility that properly belongs to people.
